Compulsive masturbation is the most secretive and isolating of all the types of sexual acting out. It’s also the most common, either with or without pornography. Many people view sexual self-stimulation as shameful, dirty, or sinful so they’re unlikely to discuss their compulsion with a therapist. They are more likely to seek help from a therapist for anxiety, depression, feelings of loneliness and isolation, and the inability to form intimate relationships with other people. Some masturbate as part of their daily routine, and some people are binge masturbators who will “lose themselves” for hours or days at a time, continuing even after physically injuring their genitalia.
